A Defining Moment – The HEJA Conference and a Unified Stand Against Discrimination
May 2023 marked a significant milestone in the journey toward inclusion and justice in faith spaces in Namibia. At the HEJA Conference, something remarkable happened: diverse religious leaders came together and spoke with one voice against discrimination.
The conference brought together influential figures from across denominations, including the Deputy-Bishop and General Secretary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Namibia, the Bishop of the Methodist Church in Namibia, the Head of Pentecostal and Charismatic Churches in Namibia, and other clergy members. This gathering alone was a powerful statement—unity across traditions in pursuit of a common goal.
But what emerged from the conference was even more impactful.
A resolution against discrimination was drafted and presented to the clergy present. In a moment that will be remembered as both courageous and historic, the resolution was unanimously adopted.
This was not just a symbolic gesture. It was a clear and collective commitment by faith leaders to confront discrimination within their spaces and to promote dignity, respect, and inclusion for all people—including LGBTI individuals.
For TULINAM, the significance of this moment cannot be overstated. It affirmed that change is not only possible but already underway. It showed that when leaders engage with empathy and understanding, they can reshape narratives that have long caused harm.
The HEJA Conference also highlighted the importance of dialogue and partnership. It is through continued engagement—between faith institutions, civil society, and communities—that lasting transformation occurs.
This resolution serves as both a milestone and a call to action. It challenges faith communities to live out their values of love, justice, and compassion in tangible ways.
As TULINAM continues its work, moments like these fuel our hope and strengthen our resolve. Because every step toward inclusion, no matter how small it may seem, brings us closer to a society where everyone can belong—fully and authentically.
